Objectives:
Teach curriculum outlined by the Utah State Office of Education and Granite School District. Provide a learning environment that is safe, challenging, and positive. Foster an atmosphere of respect, teamwork, and love of learning.
Suggestions for Parents:
Please check and sign student planners each night; I will do the best to check student planners daily. This is a great place to write me a note if you need to excuse a student early from class. Checking my email during class time is difficult at times, as I am busy teaching/assisting your students, and occasionally the internet is down and I may not get our message until after school. Please read through the first 20 pages of your student’s planner with your student. These pages outline the school’s policies on attendance, discipline, field trips, safe school, computer use, etc. Some pages require a parent’s or guardian’s signature. Check your student’s progress using the Grades Program you can access from our school’s webpage: Driggs Home Page Look for the “Parent Portal” to get started. Please check your child’s grades regularly, (I recommend at least once a week.) It is empowering your child to know how to check her/his grades. It’s also good place to carry on dialogue about assignments/grades before there is a problem. Please notify me if you know that your student will be missing school for any reason. I am happy to send missing work home with a sibling. If your child is going to miss work for an extended period, please plan to help your child to make work up in a timely manner upon your child’s return to school. Refer to the school-wide homework policy. If you have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me for an appointment before or after school.
Reading/ Language Arts/ Spelling:
1. Use of basal text, workbooks, novels, and other reading material will be used to develop reading skills. Curriculum will be differentiated based on need and grade level.
2. Language writing and grammar, as well as spelling skills, will be taught and incorporated within the reading program. A spelling/vocabulary list will be provided weekly and tests usually will be given on Fridays.
3. Personal choice reading is also required both at school and at home.
Home reading minutes are to be tracked on a calendar provided by your child’s language arts teacher and turned in the last day of each month. Students should be reading 20 minutes per night, with at least 5 minutes practicing oral fluency, (reading out loud)
4. Critical thinking skills will be taught and included in the reading and writing curriculum in my language arts classes.
5. Language Arts grades are
Math:
GoMath is the curriculum aligned with the Utah State Common Core Math Standards Granite School District mandates.
This year students will be graded on Proficiency Based Scales in all subjects. Each standard will have multiple opportunities for students to demonstrate their proficiency for each standard. Homework is a chance for your student to practice each standard to help them demonstrate their proficiency. Points will not be given towards students’ proficiency “grades” for homework. Having said that, it is important to note, practice of any of the standards is important, and each day’s lesson will be corrected, and feedback will be given in order to help students prepare for proficiency assessments. More information will be forthcoming regarding Proficiency Based Learning (PGL). Late work will not affect a student’s PBL grade, but will need to be finished because this is practice for an assessment that will be posted in Gradebook.
Extra credit will no longer be used as part of a student’s proficiency grade.
Gradebook will look different this year. All subjects will will be evaluated on proficiency-based scales this year. This system is new to our community, students, and teachers. More information will be forthcoming on this new way of evaluating students’ proficiency and growth.

Technology:
We will be using technology a lot this year! It is important that the students are being safe, responsible, and respectful, while using technology.
Using a Chromebook/iPad in class is a privilege. That privilege may be taken away if a student misuses the Chromebooks, iPads, or the internet. Students should understand the expectations listed below and should follow them.
Be Safe When moving away from my desk I will close my Chromebook and carry it against my body using both hands to keep it from falling. If something inappropriate appears on my screen, I will immediately close my Chromebook and bring it to my teacher. I will not have food or drink around the Chromebooks. Be Responsible I will not give out or post my personal information anywhere on the internet. I will use teacher-approved websites. Only educational games may be played on the Chromebook because it is a tool for learning. (Only played when approved by the teacher) I will not copy another person’s work and say that it is my own. (plagiarism) Be Respectful I will not access any other person’s documents or information. I will use appropriate language while online and will not engage in any form of cyber bullying. I will not do anything online or using the Chromebook that can harm me or another person in any way.
Please let me know if you have any questions or concerns. Thank you!
This is going to be a fantastic school year!
